Ever wonder what energy reduction strategies work the best? Would you like to know from the experience of Owners who manage multiple buildings, compare costs, and keep track of energy use by building?
The Tacoma/Olympia branch of Cascadia Green Building Council has assembled managers of campuses throughout the South Puget Sound that are keeping track of energy use by building, and who understand what makes each building stand out. The academic and design community will be represented as well. This is an opportunity to review energy conserving strategies from theory to practice and understand what works.
Hear from a distinguished panel of presenters with impressive portfolios of buildings and work in small groups on solving complex real-life scenarios from a local building operator.
Joel Loveland: Professor of Architecture and the Director of the Integrated Design Lab in the School of Architecture, College of Built Environments, University of Washington. His teaching includes design studios and seminars in sustainable design for high levels of energy and daylighting performance. The Lab is funded by public agencies such as the US. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and private not-for-profit organizations such as the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and the New Buildings Institute; and architecture firms such as the Miller Hull Partnership, NBBJ, ZGF and Lake Flato.
Michael Knaack, Bethel School District Energy Manager, has been conserving resources all his life. Since implementing an energy conservation program in 2005, he has helped Bethel Schools earn nationally recognized awards while saving over $4 million in taxpayer dollars. Under his leadership, Bethel Schools was recognized in 2012 as an ENERGY STAR Leader with 18 out of 23 eligible buildings earning the ENERGY STAR label while maintaining an overall portfolio average of 82. Michael has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland, is a certified Air Force instructor and earned his Building Operator Certification in 2007.
Brian Haugk, Hargis Engineers. As a principal and engaged project manager, Brian Haugk provides leadership to Hargis' mechanical consulting engineering team. Over his 19-year career, he has contributed to the development of the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol and engineered over 30 projects seeking sustainable certification. He holds a Bachelor and Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho and is a licensed professional engineer in 31 states, Washington DC and 4 Canadian provinces.
